Danilovgrad is a destination renowned for religious tourism. The monasteries of Ostrog and Ždrebaonik are two highly significant cultural, historical, and religious landmarks that have attracted numerous believers and visitors for decades.

OSTROG MONASTERY

Ostrog Monastery is located in the Ostroške Grede mountain massif in the municipality of Danilovgrad and is one of the most visited monasteries in the Balkans. It attracts both groups and individual visitors from around the world, regardless of their religious affiliation. The monastery was founded by Saint Basil of Ostrog in 1665.

The spiritual complex consists of the Upper and Lower Monasteries. The Upper Monastery, situated in a natural cave at an elevation of 900 meters, comprises two cave churches:

  • The Lower Church, dedicated to the Presentation of the Holy Mother of God, built in 1774.
  • The Upper Church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, established in 1665.

The Lower Monastery includes the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1824, along with monastic quarters and a theological seminary dating back to 1742. It was in this complex that Metropolitan Vasilije Jovanović was canonized as a saint after his death. Above the Lower Monastery, on a plateau, the Church of Saint Martyr Stanko was erected in 2004.

Located 2 kilometers from Danilovgrad, Ždrebaonik Monastery has historically been a gathering place for the Bjelopavlići clan. Its church, dedicated to Archangel Michael, houses the relics of Saint Arsenije of Srem. It is a women’s monastery and continues to play an essential role in the spiritual life of the region.
